Scholarships
are available for educational funding of persons pursuing undergraduate
or graduate study.
Processing the Funds
I. The Finance Committee
- Recommends funds in budget from the general fund for awarding scholarships.
- The Treasurer forwards checks to the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the recipients.
II. The Scholarship Committee
- Reviews applications.
- Recommends the awards of scholarships and allocation of funds.
- Maintains a five-year record of all recipients of monetary awards.
III. Board of Directors
- Approves the budgeted funds for scholarships.
- Announces the Scholarship Award Program through the chapter web page and Newsletters.
- Approves the recommendations of the Scholarship Committee.
Scholarship Award Procedure
Undergraduate Student Scholarship
- Number of scholarships per year
- A total of 12 undergraduate scholarships of $500 each will be awarded annually. One undergraduate scholarship will be awarded in the fall and the spring to an applicant from each of the six Beta Delta at-large universities with numbers of inductees up to 50. One additional scholarship for fall and spring will be budgeted and will be awarded to an applicant from a school who has inducted an additional 50 students the previous year. There will be a total of 14 budgeted undergraduate scholarships.
- A total of 6 graduate scholarships of $500 each will be awarded. Three will be awarded in the fall and 3 in the spring.
- If there are no applicants from a school in either fall or spring, the designated scholarship will be awarded to another applicant selected by the Scholarship Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. Maximal diversity will be used in selecting this recipient.
- Scholarships will be awarded as a part of the fall and spring induction ceremony. Deadlines for receiving applications will be October 1 for the fall induction awards and March 1 for the spring induction awards. Applicants may request that they be considered for either or both award periods. If they are unable to attend the award ceremony, the recipient should appoint a designee to receive the award.
- Three copies of the application are required. One copy of all supporting documents is required (transcript, verification of enrollment, scholarly paper, letters of recommendation). The paragraph regarding applicant goals submitted on the application may be published in the Beta Delta newsletter.
Graduate Student Scholarship
Scholarships are available for educational funding of persons pursuing graduate
(Master’s or Doctoral) study. Six scholarships in the amount of $500 will be awarded annually (a total of $3000).
I. Eligibility for Graduate Student Scholarship
- The applicant must be an active member of Sigma Theta Tau Beta Delta Chapter-at-Large
- The applicant must be a graduate student currently enrolled in a graduate program.
- Applicant pursuing master’s degree – degree must be in nursing.
- Applicant pursuing doctoral degree – degree may be in a related field.
- Completion of the application process:
Preference will be given to a new applicant over an applicant who has received a scholarship in the past. However, this person must meet all of the criteria.
II. Procedure for Application Process
- Three (3) copies of the application and one copy of a scholarly paper for the scholarship award are to be submitted to the Scholarship Committee.
- Steps in the application process:
- Completion of the application form. Application forms are available on the Beta Delta web page.
- Submit an example of a scholarly paper (i.e., a paper that the applicant has already written for a course or publication, etc.)
- Submit two letters of reference. Letters are to be sealed and marked confidential by the person completing the reference letter. Letters are to be included as part of the completed packet. At least, one of the two references must be from a Sigma Theta Tau member.
- Submit a verification of enrollment in the graduate program of an institution of higher learning.
- An interview may be scheduled for finalists to meet with representatives of the Scholarship Committee.
III. Competitive Basis for Fund Allocation
- Clarity of thought and expression in the scholarly paper and interview (if conducted)
- Contribution or potential contribution to nursing
